Feeling Drained by Shift Work?
Shift work can be tough. If you work a night shift, you're going to work when the rest of the world is heading to bed. Or, you may work shifts that change regularly. Getting your body adjusted to variations in your work time is important to your overall health.
If you work this kind of job or are thinking about performing shift work, here are 3 tips to help you cope with a shift work schedule:
- Get plenty of sleep. It sounds obvious, but it's hard to catch up on your z's when you know it's daytime. One of the best things you can do to help your body sleep after work is to set room-darkening shades to prevent light from coming into your room when you are trying to sleep. An eye mask or ear plugs can be great to combat any extra light or sound that distracts you.
- Exercise. You may be tired, but don’t skip it. Exercise promotes the circulation of blood and oxygen throughout the body, and releases endorphins that will make you feel great. You don't even need to join a gym. If you're able to do it, walking is one of the best forms of exercise. It's free, and you can ask a friend or family member to join you.
- Focus on healthy foods. This will take some planning ahead. When you are tired and hungry, you are less likely to want to cut up vegetables and cook a balanced meal. You will be tempted to go to the drive-through or binge on potato chips. Stocking up on fresh fruits and vegetables for snacks can make a huge difference in your diet and the way you feel. Drinking plenty of water will keep you hydrated and feeling alert.
Shift work can be a challenging to your mind and body, but you can be proactive and make small changes to your lifestyle that can help you adjust.
